Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb extra lean ground turkey or 93% lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup finely diced yellow onion
  • 1/2 cup finely diced green bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely grated carrots
  • 2 cloves garlic , minced
  • 1/2 cup low -sodium tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 whole grain hamburger buns

Method
 

  1. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground protein, cooking until browned and crumbled through.
  2. Drain any rendered fat from the skillet and return to the heat source.
  3. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and grated carrots to the meat; sauté for 5 to 7 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
  4. Incorporate the minced garlic and cook for 60 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, and maple syrup.
  6. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded.
  7. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  8. Divide the mixture evenly among four toasted whole grain buns and serve immediately.
